Scriptorium & Hymns Recap

What is a Scriptorium? Scriptorium is an event that includes Scripture & Hymns all in His name. On June 30th, they quoted sections from John 21 (Peter’s Commission), Acts 2.

Last weekend we had the honor of experiencing our very first Scriptorium. The event flowed seamlessly as various members and special guests stood up and recited scripture. It was followed by hymns accompanied by their orchestra and a few breathtaking acapella performances. They sounded like angels echoing along the walls of the whole church.
Afterward, we all gathered for fellowship in the building across the way. I walked into the room to a smell that was so familiar. Can it be? It’s my favorite local pizza shop, Whata Lotta Pizza! It’s the homemade sauce that binds it all together so deliciously. There was a tricolored coleslaw that had an Asian twist to it. You can taste the sweet, salty, and tangy sauce coated with sesame seed oil. Delicious!

Everyone joined in prayer to thank God for a wonderful evening of Scripture and Hymns as Pastor Orman blessed our food. The congregation has a warm and inviting presence with a specific hint of mannerisms, that are polite and feel welcoming. The vibes of a village. They had refreshments, and yes, I had a piece or two of homemade Rice Krispie treats. Not the ones in the blue wrapper. These were made from scratch still in the glass casserole dish. An older gentleman came by and was serving refreshments. The young lady was humbled, only 19 years old, and so gracious and appreciative. An act I don’t see as often as I hope for. We started talking and she mentioned that her brother was in the Bible Bee.

Have you ever heard of the Bible Bee? Think Spelling Bee but instead of spelling you’re reciting bible verses. What a magnificent thing it is to witness children reciting scripture by memorization. Some of us have a hard time remembering the things we say. Let alone the things we read. With that said, we could all use a little more effort to practice reading intentionally with purpose. The best place I found to practice was by reading scripture cards and then looking them up in the Bible, reading verse by verse.

Back to the Bible Bee. We met a few champions last weekend at the Scriptorium, at Warner Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington Beach, California. These kids are amazing! Now, all grown some of whom have started competing at 8-9 years old. “It’s impressive how young minds are like sponges and can soak everything up.”, she says. She goes on to share that she was homeschooled and appreciates how her parents raised her by giving her the time she needed to build strength and wisdom. Which better prepared her to go out into the world and make good choices.

Senior pastor, Steve B. Orman has been serving and teaching the word of God since 1986. His son, Justin B. Orman has been preaching for over 14 years and joined his father as the assistant pastor in 2017. They call themselves faithful servants and it was clear to me that is who they are. They are a humble church with a mighty faith and love for Christ! With a 97% weekly attendance rate, you can feel the love of God put into practice here. A solid foundation with roots so deep they teach old-school hymns, have a choir, and preach the word of God through books of the Bible.
